Privacy Policy
The short version
- CiteRight collects no personal data whatsoever.
- Nothing you type is ever sent to a server.
- Your citation history is stored only on your own device.
- No analytics, no tracking, no third-party services.
- The extension works entirely offline once installed.
What CiteRight does
CiteRight is a Chrome extension that generates formatted academic citations in APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago, Turabian, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA, CSE, and OSCOLA styles. It runs entirely within your browser with no server-side component.
Data we collect
None. CiteRight does not collect, transmit, store remotely, or share any personal data or usage information of any kind.
Permissions explained
CiteRight requests the following Chrome permissions, each used solely to provide the auto-fill feature:
- activeTab — allows the extension to read the title, URL, and metadata of the page you are currently viewing when you click "Fill now." This data is used only to pre-fill the citation form and is never stored or transmitted.
- scripting — allows the extension to run a small script on the active tab to extract page metadata (author, publication date, journal details) for the auto-fill feature. No scripts run automatically — only when you explicitly click "Fill now."
- storage — allows the extension to save your last 20 citations and your style preferences locally in Chrome's built-in storage on your own device. This data never leaves your browser.
Local storage
CiteRight stores the following data locally on your device using chrome.storage.local:
- Your last 20 generated citations (text, style, and timestamp)
- A count of total citations generated (used only to decide when to show a one-time support prompt)
- Whether you have dismissed the support prompt
This data is stored only on your device and is deleted when you uninstall the extension. You can clear it at any time using the "Clear all" button in the extension's history panel.
Third-party services
CiteRight does not use any analytics, advertising, or tracking services. The "Buy me a coffee" button links to Ko-fi — clicking it opens Ko-fi's website in a new tab. CiteRight itself has no integration with Ko-fi beyond this link; any data you provide to Ko-fi is governed by Ko-fi's own privacy policy.
Google Fonts (Inter and DM Serif Display) are loaded from Google's servers when you open the extension popup. This is a standard web font request. See Google's privacy policy for details.
Children's privacy
CiteRight does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. As no data is collected at all, there is no specific risk to younger users.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a meaningful way (for example, if a future version of CiteRight introduces any data collection), the updated policy will be posted at this URL and the "Last updated" date above will be revised. Continued use of the extension after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
